Monica Escalante’s journey as a home care provider began at a young age. Growing up, she supported her grandparents—her grandmother managing diabetes and her grandfather facing cancer and dementia. At just 12, Monica was responsible for administering her grandmother’s insulin, demonstrating a rare maturity and compassion that have guided her path in care.
Early in her career, Monica became a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and later pursued a degree as a Registered Nurse (RN). During her 19 years working at a nursing facility, she took on roles aimed at improving patients’ quality of life. Her commitment and passion for helping others led her to establish a transportation program that helped patients attend medical appointments but soon expanded to include group outings, lunches, and other social activities, enhancing patients’ social well-being and fostering a sense of community.
Monica’s IHSS journey became official when her husband sustained a neck injury that left him in need of daily care. Monica was his primary care provider for 12 years, until they separated, at which point other members of their family stepped in to provide the care he needed, a testament to how compassion for others runs in the family.
Soon after, Monica’s heart led her to care for her ex-mother-in-law when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. This devotion also allowed her children to build a meaningful relationship with their grandmother in her final days.
“Most people don’t take this job out of choice— it’s a job out of necessity,” Monica explains.
After her ex-mother-in-law passed away, Monica began caring for an elderly woman named Virginia. Like many seniors living with disabilities, Virginia relies on compassionate support to navigate daily life with safety, dignity, and joy. The bond they share is truly special—Monica’s presence is deeply missed even on her days off.
Their strong connection has also opened new opportunities for both. Last year, they traveled to Sacramento with other union members to advocate for thriving wages and better benefits. Inspired by that meaningful experience, Virginia later invited Monica to accompany her on a trip to visit family out of state. This journey not only allowed Virginia to reunite with loved ones while still receiving the care she needs but also gave Monica the chance to explore new places—all while doing the work she loves.
When reflecting on her journey as a union member, Monica says “Being a member has opened up opportunities for me as a care provider to show my client part of the union. It helped me give her experiences I normally wouldn’t be able to.”
As a proud member of UDW, Monica has stepped into leadership roles that she would have never thought about if it weren’t for the encouragement and support from fellow union members. Monica’s story exemplifies the love, strength, and empathy that care providers give back to the world and those around them. Discover more inspiring member stories at udw.org/our-stories.
