Statement from Doug Moore, Executive Director, United Domestic Workers (UDW/AFSCME Local 3930):
Yesterday, the Monica Montgomery Steppe campaign celebrated a historic victory at UDW headquarters as Monica became the first Black woman ever to be elected to the San Diego Board of Supervisors, and the first African American elected to the board in over forty years. UDW was honored to be one of the first to endorse Monica, and our members played a pivotal role in this victory.
The 37,000 home care and family child care providers of San Diego County endorsed Monica because she is an unwavering supporter of working families. Monica’s experiences as the daughter of a home care worker give her firsthand insight into the vital service UDW members provide to our communities.
In her new role as Supervisor, we have full confidence that Monica will continue to be a steadfast advocate for our community, championing the needs of home care and child care workers. Together, we will strive to secure a thriving wage and good benefits for caregivers, and to make quality, affordable child care accessible to every San Diegan who needs it.
