UDW Leaves Elon Musk’s X Over Platform’s Role in Spreading Hate and Disinformation

SAN DIEGO – Today, the United Domestic Workers (UDW) announced its decision to leave the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, citing concerns over its role in amplifying hate, disinformation, and authoritarian influence.

“As a social justice union, we cannot in good conscience continue supporting a platform that has become a tool for spreading hate and division while enriching an autocrat intent on undermining democracy,” said UDW Executive Director Doug Moore.

“Social media should be a space for people to share information and connect in meaningful ways. However, X has become the antithesis of that ideal—serving instead as a vehicle for consolidating state power, promoting bigotry, and spreading misinformation. At UDW, we refuse to contribute to the platform’s growth and influence. I also urge all of our followers on social media, especially unions and other social justice organizations to do the same. Stop feeding the beast that trying to kill you off!”

Moore also noted that UDW is assessing its presence on all social media platforms to ensure the union remains connected with its members and communities while upholding its commitment to constructive dialogue and community building. While we recognize concerns about corporate influence over social media, we remain active on Facebook (@UDW), Instagram (@udw_union), Bluesky (@udw.org), and LinkedIn (@UDWA) to ensure our members have access to vital information, advocacy efforts, and engagement opportunities.
