Honoring the legacy of Martha Martinez

The legacy and work of our union isn’t just carried by our founders or our leaders, but by our members who uplift each other and our communities every single day through their passion and dedication to care work and our union. We are deeply saddened that UDW has recently lost one of our own, long-time UDW member, IHSS provider, and leader Martha Martinez. We will miss her smile, her infectious good spirit, and her commitment to fighting the good fight.

Martha, who lived in Riverside, was a longtime caregiver and member of UDW for 21 years. She cared for her daughter, Gabby, who is also beloved by UDW members and staff, as she was always right alongside Martha at every event and rally, we held. Martha was elected to the Executive Board as the first-ever District 3 Chair in 2007. Since then, she has been a delegate at every AFSCME and UDW convention.

Martha loved her union, often speaking out at BOS meetings and sharing her and Gabby’s story to help our cause. She traveled to Sacramento to fight for UDW members at the Capitol many times. You could always count on Martha to volunteer at election time and help turn out people to vote. Even in her final days, she remained an active and engaged union member and always tried her best to come out and support her UDW family at events.

“Martha was a wonderful mother to Gabby and dedicated her time to making sure that IHSS is protected,” said UDW Assistant Executive Director Johanna Hester. “She led Riverside county vigorously and with community in mind. May her soul rest in peace.”

Her lasting impact on our union will not soon be forgotten and her legacy will live on through all of those she touched through her work.

A rosary service will be held for Martha this Friday evening, October 13, in Riverside, with services to be held the following day.
